Rules and Regulations for BASc with Study Abroad (Y001)

Find the Rules and Regulations for your BASc with Study Abroad Degree Programme here.

Eligibility for Study Abroad

In order to confirm your place at a Study Abroad partner institution, you will be expected to:

  1. You must achieve a 2:1 raw average (60%) in your module marks (240 credits) at the end of year 2, and also a 2:1 raw average (60%) for your second year modules (120 credits).
  2. You must be able to progress into year 3 in order to be able to go abroad. If you are unable to progress into year three in time to begin study at your overseas institution, at the start of their academic programme, you will not be able to go abroad.
  3. If progressing into year 3 requires you to undergo Late Summer Assessment, you cannot go abroad until the results from those assessments are available and we can confirm that you can progress into Year 3. If your overseas institution starts its academic programme before the date at which we can confirm your progression, normally the last week in September, you will not be able to take up your place at this institution. In this situation, the BASc Study Abroad Officer Elena will do all she can to arrange a different placement (or internship) that can start when your progression status is confirmed. However, we cannot guarantee to arrange such an alternative placement at short notice.
  4. If you cannot take up your year aboard placement you will be transferred to the three year BASc programme.

Commentary: These rules exist in order to protect students, as study abroad students will have to cope with university courses at an institution abroad often taking courses in a foreign language. Students will find such courses particularly difficult if they are also struggling with the subject itself.

In certain very rare cases we reserve the right to decide that a student is unsuitable for a particular overseas institution or that it is not in an individual student’s best interests to undertake a year abroad. These decisions would always be made after extensive discussion with the student involved, and their Personal Tutor, and would be exercised as part of our duty of care for a student’s welfare.

Study Abroad Regulations

In order to progress to your final year from your year abroad, you must be complete in 360 UCL credits (that is, all modules taken at UCL including the BASC0035 Study Abroad Project and the BASC0027 Shell Units) and have passed 330 course units in total. To be complete in a course unit you must have submitted assessable work for all components of the module.

To pass the BASC0027 Shell Units, you must complete all the required engagement activities:

  • Pass 70% of the required credit load at the host institution (this includes regular attendance for your courses and participating in exams)
  • Submission of the Year Abroad Declaration
  • Submission of the arrival and departure form
  • Submission of the Reflective Piece
  • Submission completion of the Study Abroad Questionnaire

The penalties for failing to satisfy the above requirements are as follows:

Failure to pass or complete the shell units (BASC0027) will result in the student being transferred to a three year degree programme (UCL Reg 3.2.8.ii) and will be awarded an alternative degree title upon graduation. This alternative degree title will reflect the fact that a student has not fulfilled all the requirements of the BASc with Study Abroad.

Failure to pass or complete the Study Abroad Project (BASC0035) will mean you will carry the Fail on your transcript. You cannot re-sit the assignment.

Details of the Study Abroad Project module (BASC0035) and Shell Units (BASC0027) are outlined on the Study Abroad Moodle page.

Language study whilst abroad

One of the primary aims of the year abroad is language acquisition and so you must continue with your core language study whilst on your year abroad so that you can progress at least two levels when you return to UCL for your final year.

For example, if you complete Level 2(B) at the end of your second year, you will be expected to take the equivalent of Level 3(C) while abroad before enrolling on at least Level 4(D) when you return to UCL for your final year. You can do this by studying at an institution where the language of instruction is the language you are taking, or by enrolling in language classes at the appropriate level at an English speaking institution. If language tuition at the appropriate level is not available at your host institution, you are responsible for sourcing and funding teaching elsewhere. You will be required to sign a declaration form as part of the main application process confirming this.

You are not permitted to go back to your home country for your year abroad or your traineeship placement.
