Automating Site Detection

Developing tools in aerial imagery analysis.

Mark Altaweel is leading a project, funded by an ASPIRE Award for Research Excellence (AARE), where tools are being developing to be used in aerial imagery analysis.

The tools are to be applied in the projection of heritage as well as identifying archaeological features in the landscape using automated techniques, which helps survey and conduct reconnaissance for such features.

The techniques will be used by archaeologists conducting landscape surveys as well as officials interested in monitoring and protecting heritage sites. So far this work has led to the development of a public tool and the team is currently working on publishing results.
