Council for British Archaeology Award nomination for Sakshi Surana

17 October 2023

Congratulations to UCL Institute of Archaeology alumna, Sakshi Surana, who has been nominated for a CBA Early Career Archaeologist award for 2023.

Student in dark blue top and orange high-vis trousers, kneeling on the ground beside the edge of a trench, holding a board on her knee, with a red-bricked wall in the background

Sakshi took the BA in Archaeology with a Placement Year degree programme with us, completing her studies last academic year.

Our accredited BA in Archaeology with a Placement Year programme offers students all the flexibility of the BA in Archaeology programme combined with the opportunity to work as a part of a professional team at Archaeology South-East (ASE) to excavate, survey, study, manage and conserve historic sites and finds. Students get to learn what it’s like to work full-time in the archaeology industry, gain practical skills (including vital excavation experience), and make industry connections.

According to Sakshi whose ASE placement took place in 2021-22:

I’m honestly looking forward to being able to try different areas of archaeology within a commercial unit. This lets me try fieldwork, post-excavation work and even allows me to work with different specialists, which I genuinely think is a wonderful opportunity."

During her time at the Institute Sakshi also co-organised a student outreach event as part of London Schools' Climate Kick-Start 2022 and was awarded the Norah Moloney Prize for fieldwork as well as the Hellyar Prize for outstanding contributions to the life and work of the Institute of Archaeology. She was also a key member of our EDI Committee and led on our Schools Working Party.

The Archaeological Achievement Awards (formerly the British Archaeology Awards) are organised by the Council for British Archaeology and showcase the best of archaeology in the UK and Ireland. The Early Career Archaeologist Award 2023 is sponsored by the Royal Archaeological Institute. The awards ceremony will take place at the De Grey Rooms, York on Friday 24 November 2023.

Congratulations Sakshi on your well-deserved CBA award nomination!
