American Philosophical Society (APS) award for Cristina Castillo

Cristina Castillo (UCL Institute of Archaeology) has received an award from the American Philosophical Society (APS) as part of their Franklin Research Grant programme.

Cristina Castillo is currently working with Dorian Fuller on the NERC-funded project 'Evolutionary dynamics of vegetative agriculture in the Ethiopian Highlands: integrating archaeobotanical and genomic science' with colleagues at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

The American Philosophical Society award will allow Cristina to study the plant remains from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ban Chiang, Thailand.

Excavation at the site took place in the 1970s and the sediments are housed in the Penn Museum, Philadelphia, USA, as part of their legacy collection.

The work will form part of the Institute for Southeast Asian Archaeology’s (ISEAA) ‘Year of Botany’ programme.
