The ERC project 'EVERYDAYISLAM: Becoming Muslim: Cultural Change, Everyday Life and State Formation in early Islamic North Africa (600-1000)', led by Corisande Fenwick, aims to rewrite the history of Muslim rule and the Islamisation of daily life from the perspective of the communities living through this pivotal period, using a combination of material and written sources.

The post-holder will work closely with the PI and will be primarily responsible for conducting research on medieval settlement dynamics in the three case-study regions, identifying sites from satellite imagery, digitising cartographic and archaeological data, managing the existing project database, and analysing the spatial data gathered from excavations. This appointment will involve recurring periods of fieldwork in Tunisia and Morocco.

The post is funded for 24 months in the first instance and will be available from 1 August 2022. Fieldwork is currently planned for September and November/December.

The successful candidate will have obtained, or be close to obtaining (within six months of submission), a PhD in late antique/ Islamic/ medieval archaeology, field work experience in the Mediterranean or Middle East, and have an excellent knowledge of GIS and digital recording techniques.

Applications are encouraged from those who are underrepresented in the sector and in the UCL Institute of Archaeology including, but not exclusive to, people from Black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds, women, and people who identify as having a disability.
