Job Vacancy: Research Assistant for National Trust Archaeological Collections

The UCL Institute of Archaeology currently has a vacancy for a Research Assistant to support research projects with National Trust Archaeological Collections.

Conservation Research Lab at the UCL Institute of Archaeology

A part-time Research Assistant in Archaeological Conservation is sought on an 'As and When' appointment basis (likely to be no more than 7.3 hours/1 day per week for 12 months in the first instance) to assist the National Trust Conservation Advisor for Archaeological Artefacts and Collections in supporting research projects with the National Trust.

The UCL Institute of Archaeology has a well-established partnership with the National Trust and has conducted numerous joint conservation and research projects. The Research Assistant is required to assist with existing projects and to help develop new areas of joint research. They will report to Dean Sully, Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Conservation.

Duties will include:

  • Coordinating and developing UCL student involvement with ongoing National Trust Conservation Projects (e.g. Hinemihi Project, Clandon Park, Inspired By Knole Project, Chedworth Roman Villa Mosaics Conservation).
  • Conducting research projects (e.g. Chedworth Roman Villa feasibility projects for HLF Phase 2 application).
  • Contributing to interventive conservation treatment projects (e.g. leather shoes from Quarry Bank Mill, Chedworth Roman Villa Museum).
  • Conservation Report Writing (e.g. completion of National Trust Archaeological Artefacts Survey).
  • Preparation of Conservation Records for archiving with the National Trust (Hinemihi Project at Clandon Park).
  • To contribute to publications, social media and public outreach activities related to the projects.

Candidates must possess:

  • A post graduate qualification in the Conservation of Archaeological Artefacts
  • Substantial experience of National Trust conservation projects
  • A positive attitude towards collaborative teamwork
  • Ability to project manage student conservation projects
  • Ability to conduct conservation research projects
  • Demonstrable skills in conservation project report writing

The post is offered on UCL Grade 6b (currently £16.25 to £17.13 per hour, including London Allowance).
