This lecture will examine the archaeological evidence for places and practices of worship in ancient Israel during the First Millennium BC, and consider recent interpretations and theories.

About the Speaker
Deborah Rooke is Visiting Tutor in Old Testament at St Stephen's House, Oxford, and Associate in Old Testament Hermeneutics at Regent's Park College, Oxford. She is also a Senior Associate of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, where she teaches a course on the religion of Israel. She has held posts in Old Testament at the University of Wales Lampeter and King's College London. She is an expert on cult and ritual in ancient Israel; gender and sexuality in the Hebrew Bible; and the use of biblical material in music, especially the oratorios of Handel, and is the author of Zadok’s Heirs: the Role and Development of the High Priesthood in Ancient Israel.
