Research summary

Research Interests

1. Anthropological and political ecological approaches to studying livelihoods of natural-resource-dependent populations. Focus; small-scale fishers, and fisher/farmer populations in floodplain/estuarine environments. Research in Asia (Mekong Basin), East Africa and UK (Thames estuary)

    • Importance and role of aquatic biodiversity in floodplain environments 
    • Conservation versus development/tourism trade-offs in Marine Protected Areas
    • Impact of agricultural intensification and other developments (e.g. hydropower dev, port dev) on aquatic based livelihoods
2. Local ecological knowledge/ practice-based knowledge versus scientific knowledge

3. Fisheries enhancement and actor-network theory 

4. Theories of learning, practice theory and research-based education  

Current & recent PhD supervision / co-supervision 

  • 2016 - ongoing  Kristen Steele  Eel fisheries from local to global: Drivers of exploitation and prospects for sustainability (NERC Studentship 2016)

  • 2014 - ongoing Daniela Pozy. Is increased diversity always beneficial for social-ecological systems? Peruvian Guano Islands, Isles and Capes Reserve System. Scholarship from the Peruvian Government. Supervisory collaboration with Geography.

  • 2011 - ongoing Lucia Perez De Oliveira  (Part Time) A governance analysis of MPAs in Galicia, Spain. Self-funded. Supervisory collaboration with Geography.

  • Marie-Annick Moreau (Awarded 2014).”The lake is our office’” Fisheries resources in rural livelihoods and local governance on the Rufiji River floodplain, Tanzania. Canadian Government studentship. 

  • Helen Cross (Awarded 2013) Small-scale marine fishing in West Africa’s Bijagós Archipelago -Guinea-Bissau. NERC/ESRC Studentship. Collaboration with Institute of Zoology.

  • Christine Carter (Awarded 2012) Tourism, Conservation and Development around a MPA in Kenya. (ESRC Studentship).

2016-present Cities Aquatic Resources Project. An initiative that combines teaching and research and is aimed at improving our understanding of the production, supply and consumption of aquatic resources in our urban centres.
