UCL celebrates Hong Kong alumni community
10 February 2023
Over 125 Hong Kong-based alumni came together to network, learn and celebrate at a series of events marking UCL’s first trip to Asia since 2019.
Home to over 4,000 alumni and one of UCL’s oldest alumni groups, Hong Kong has long formed an integral part of the university’s global community. This enduring relationship was recognised, while new connections were formed, at a panel event and alumni reception which took place in February 2023.
Bringing bright minds together
On February 2, thought leaders from the UCL alumni community gathered for a forward-looking discussion on entrepreneurship, wealth creation and the next generation.
Johnny Liu (Economics 2001), Managing Director at Nomura, and Russell Pell (Biochemical Engineering 1990), founder of GXS Partners, co-hosted the panel event, drawing on their extensive industry experience and knowledge.
They were joined by similarly distinguished speakers: Asif Ghafoor (Mathematics and Computer Science 2001), founder and CEO of Spacious, and Patricia Ho (Laws 2002), Deputy General Counsel at OKX.
After a lively conversation between panellists and a Q&A session, attendees had the opportunity to meet fellow alumni with shared interests and career goals, and build their professional networks.

Meeting old friends and new
On the following day, chair of UCL Council Victor Chu (Laws 1979) hosted a drinks reception and dinner to welcome Dr Michael Spence to Hong Kong for the first time in his role as UCL President & Provost.
Over 70 guests attended the event, giving them the opportunity to connect with old friends, make new connections and hear the latest from UCL.
UCL President & Provost Dr Spence spoke at the event about the recently launched Strategic Plan and the important role that alumni in Hong Kong will play in achieving UCL’s mission of changing the world for the better.
“"It was lovely meeting the Provost and his team, and to form new connections in the UCL alumni community." - Sasha Chua (Politics, Sociology and East European Studies 2022).
