Taught Postgraduate Transition Policy 2018-19

Education Committee has agreed the following policy determining when the new regulations will be implemented for each cohort of students.

The Transition Policy is designed as a reference point for Boards of Examiners when making decisions and covers the most common scenarios that might arise.

There are occasionally more complex cases which require more individualised solutions. If you are unsure about the most appropriate course of action, please contact the Academic Policy and Quality Assurance team at academicregulations@ucl.ac.uk who can discuss precedents and options with you.

From September 2018, the following sections of the 2018-19 regulations apply to all students, regardless of their status or year of enrolment:

The following regulations will depend on the academic session on which the student is enrolled:

This breaks down as follows:

Student StatusDescriptionApplicable Regulations
StandardStudents fully enrolled on the 2018-19 academic session

These students are subject to all of the 2018-19 regulations, with the following exception:

For Master of Laws (LLM) students, the Classification will be calculated using the regulations which were in place when the student first enrolled on their programme at UCL, including where a student has Interrupted, Deferred modules and/ or undertaken Resits and Repeats. These Classification regulations are defined in the LLM Programme Summary and are available from the Faculty of Laws.

RepeatsStudents taking a year out to Repeat or Defer with Tuition modules from 2017-18

These students are ‘fully enrolled’ on the 2018-19 academic session and therefore subject to all of the 2018-19 regulations, with the following exception:

  • For Repeating Masters students, the Classification will be based on the weighted mean and on the mark in the Dissertation/ Research Project, as was the case in the 2017-18 regulations. In all other respects, students who are undertaking a Repeat are fully enrolled on the 2018-19 academic session and therefore subject to the 2018-19 regulations.
Deferrals with TuitionStudents taking a year out to Defer with Tuition modules from 2017-18These students are ‘fully enrolled’ on the 2018-19 academic session and therefore subject to all of the 2018-19 regulations.
InterruptionsStudents returning from an Interruption and enrolling on the 2018-19 academic session

These students are subject to the 2018-19 regulations with the following exception:

  • If the student completed all of the teaching before the Interruption and is only returning to be assessed, the 2017-18 regulations will apply.
Left-Resitting StudentsAny remaining Left-Resitting Finalists from the 2017-18 academic session with outstanding Resits or DeferralsThese students are subject to the 2017-18 regulations.
