New outdoor event space

Principal theme: Sustainable estate

We are opening up a new public space at the heart of our Bloomsbury campus.

Building works currently underway, in the Wilkins Terrace, will create a new west–east pedestrian route from Gower Street to Gordon Street and a new area for entertainment and events. There will also be an extended and refurbished main refectory in the undercroft of the Grade 1-listed Wilkins Building.

The terrace will be landscaped in a Portland Stone surface, ‘carved out’ to create a lower terrace alongside the refectory and an upper terrace off Wilkins North Cloisters, with a new lift and dual stairway providing access.

The new Wilkins Lower Refectory design will open up the space between the New Student Centre and the Wilkins Terrace, allowing large numbers of students and staff to use the refectory at any one time, and to flow through the space more easily. The Lower Refectory is due to reopen in early 2017.
