Principal theme: Sustainable estate |
Building work has begun on our new Student Centre. This is a major part of our plan to improve the student experience at UCL, creating a new focal point for UCL study and events.
The redesigned centre will provide spaces for different types of learning and socialising, creating 1,000 new ‘study seats’ in a mix of individual and group study spaces. There will be two floors going down and four above ground level, including a roof terrace, new ground floor landscaping, and outside public space.
The centre will also host student enquiry services and IT clusters. It is designed to be responsive to change, with flexible spaces and integrated technology. It will also uses the latest sustainable technologies, including:
- Approximately 400 square metres of photovoltaics or electric solar panels on the roof.
- A ground source heat pump to cool the building in the summer.
- Windows which automatically open to naturally ventilate the building in the spring and autumn.
The first physical structures have gone into the ground and the building is due to complete in early 2019.
