CombatingHIV and TB: the Africa Health Research Institute

In South Africa, the impact of HIV and HIV-related TB is still devastating, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains of TB and HIV present a major public health crisis.

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is a new organisation that brings together two leading centres of research to fight this co-epidemic. UCL is a significant partner, alongside others including the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The institute is based in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, where there is the highest HIV burden and where TB is responsible for more than 14% of all deaths.

The AHRI is a merger between two leading research institutions, the Africa Centre for Population Health and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB and HIV. Following its launch in July at the AIDS 2016 Conference in Durban, the new institute will be funded through grants from Wellcome and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences and the University of KwaZulu-Natal will be academic partners.

Dedicated to eliminating these diseases, the centre will also help to train the next generation of African scientists.
