Isolation and health

With the relationship of health and well-being with social isolation and loneliness being increasingly recognised Professor Amanda Sacker, Director of the ESRC International Centre of Lifecourse studies in Society and Health and colleagues hosted a policy seminar in June on Isolation and Health in later life. Four short paper drew on the findings extracted from ELSA and Understanding Society Datasets. Dr Payne from the Campaign to End Loneliness commented on the policy implications of the findings. Representatives from ILC-UK, Age-UK, Social Finance, Social Care Institute, Ageing Better, Local Government and Social Prescribing Network join in this discussions. New modelling study based on ELSA forecasts fast growing increase in the number of over 65s in need of social care

Ageing population

A new public health policy model has been developed by the Whitehall II/Liverpool University research collaboration, funded by the British Heart Foundation. The first results were published in Lancet Public Health on 24th May. We find the ageing population in England & Wales with care needs is set to grow by 25% within a decade. The IMPACT-BAM probabilistic Markov model simulates ageing of the population from 35 to 100, through 10 health states. Cumberland Lodge Retreat 2016

Our annual weekend retreat at Cumberland Lodge took place on Friday 17th June to Sunday 19th June. The event was a resounding success and a big thank you to all those helped organise the event. The UCL Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is offering two one-year Studentships for full-time students undertaking the MSc in Health and Society: Social Epidemiology (The Michael Marmot UCL Studentship in Social Epidemiology) and Dental Public Health (The Aubrey Sheiham UCL Studentship in Dental Public Health). The awards will start in October 2014 and the Studentships will consist of £2,500 towards tuition fees. The recipients will be expected to secure the remaining part of their tuition fees and to cover their living costs.

UCL Health and Society Summer School: Social Determinants of Health (14-18 July 2014)

The one week non-residential UCL Health and Society summer school: Social Determinants of Health will be held from 14-18 July 2014 at UCL in central London. The summer school is organised by the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. It provides an indepth assessment of the social determinants of health from a global research, policy and governance perspective. Participants will have numerous opportunities for discussion over the one week course.
