Become a dialogue partner and enhance UCL teaching
29 November 2016
Students are being sought to act as dialogue partners for academic staff, assisting them on their teaching, assessment and development of virtual learning environments.
The pilot will run through spring term, with up to 10 student/staff pairs from across UCL. The pairs will agree between them on the focus of 3 classroom observations, with a subsequent meeting to discuss how the sessions have gone and to explore possible enhancements to the teaching practice. The student will also feedback on an assignment brief and on a Moodle course.
Research on this practice at Bryn Mawr College, USA, has shown that consulting students in this way leads to enhanced teaching practice, the student perspective prompting reflection on the use of different approaches to teaching. There are benefits for both sides of the partnership: staff who participate in such schemes report transformations in their thinking about staff and student roles and the teaching and learning process; students taking part gain confidence, motivation, and awareness of how they learn and a stronger sense of their own identity.
