Former Software Development Apprentice
Software Development Technician Apprenticeship – Level 3
Start/End Date: Oct 2019 – May 2021
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship because I thought it was the best way to get industry-relevant qualifications while also gaining invaluable work experience in my chosen field.
Why did you choose UCL?
I chose UCL because of its reputation as a leading university, knowing that there would be world-class learning resources available to utilise if I ever needed support.
What do you hope to gain from the apprenticeship?
I hope to become fully qualified as a software developer and produce a coding portfolio to show off my work, while also becoming familiar with modern coding practices used in the workplace.
What’s your experience of apprenticeship been like so far?
My experience has been good so far with a lot of variety. It is not a walk in the park, but the support available gives me the confidence necessary to try out new things, and to fail if necessary!
What have you gained from your Apprenticeship?
I have gained many things from my apprenticeship that would have been difficult on my own, from hard skills like how to write and test a program, to soft skills like public speaking and professionalism.
What is the most important thing you have learnt from your apprenticeship to date?
The most important thing I’ve learned from the apprenticeship is how to work as part of a large organisation (and I guess the software development stuff was pretty important too!).
Any advice/tips for prospective apprentices?
My advice for prospective apprentices would be to not be afraid of asking questions, even if you think it’s silly or obvious. You are expected to learn and grow, not to know everything.
