Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship – Level 3
Start/End Date: Sept 2018 – July 2022

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I choose an apprenticeship as I feel like it is a positive way into a career in the industry compared to university as I would already have years’ experience at UCL as well as earning my qualification.

Why did you choose UCL?

When I started to look at apprenticeships there were many to choose from but I choose UCL as it is a well-known worldwide university. Industry/future employees seeing that I have years working with students at a top-grade university will be impressed.

What do you hope to gain from the apprenticeship?

I hope to gain many experience skills in machining and producing in engineering, with many highly experienced engineers.

What’s your experience of apprenticeship been like so far?

I have enjoyed my time at UCL so far, working with many different experienced people with lots of knowledge in different areas of engineering this is due to the moving around of four different departments within UCL.

What have you gained from your Apprenticeship?

I have gained lots of experience in machining and producing engineering components. For example, lots of experience turning on a lathe and using the milling machines, basic hand skills such as filing, measuring and marking out. I have also learnt many different skills such as 3D printing, modelling and laser cutting.

What is the most important thing you have learnt from your apprenticeship to date?

The most important thing I have learnt to date during this apprenticeship would either be the skills in turning different materials on the lathe or the large quantity of health and safety in engineering.

Any advice/tips for prospective apprentices?

My advice would be to listen to every technician that is giving any advice as they all have lots of experience and know what they are talking about. Other advice is to take pride and care in any work that is done as it is usually for an important purpose.
