United Kingdom Gynaecological Oncology Surgical Outcomes and Complications (UKGOSOC)

Trial Coordinator

Overview

UKGOSOC is a national audit with the aim to prospectively collect data on surgical procedures and complications across Gynaecological Oncology centres in the UK. The data will be used to obtain more precise estimates on the rates of complications resulting from surgeries for ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer. The audit will inform the way this model could be used for systematic collection of data in the United Kingdom, to uniformly capture and classify complications, determine the rates for the various types of complications and as well as design a risk adjusted model that could be used to predict morbidity from surgery.

Study Design

Data was collected onto a custom built web-based data management system hosted by the Trent cancer registry. The website was accessible only through NHSnet.

Study Design

Women undergoing major surgery in a gynaecological oncology theatre list were approached for consent to participate in the study who could give consent either to include their personal identifiers or include only anonymised data. Every user in each centre was given a unique user name and password. Data on surgery and any intraoperative complications was entered soon after surgery and postoperative information such as discharge details, diagnosis and any postoperative complications were entered on the ward contemporaneously by the surgical team. Women who had given consent to include their personal identifiers, were also sent a follow-up letter from the co-ordinating centre at University College London to capture any complications they may have suffered since discharge.  All data was analysed at the Gynaecological Cancer research centre at UCL.
