Baudelaire: Botanist of the Sidewalk

Having lived in some 40 residencies across Paris, Charles Baudelaire was steeped in city life and his poems celebrate the extraordinary characters - real and imaginary - that swarmed its pullulating streets prior to modernisation.

So 150 years after the death of the original flâneur poet, Poet in the City and the Rimbaud & Verlaine Foundation host an event to ponder the psychogeography of the city and consider Baudelaire's extraordinary impact and legacy.

Professor Matthew Beaumont, co-director of the UCL Urban Laboratory and Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the UCL Department of English, will be amongst the speakers telling the story of the father of flâneurie and celebrate his resounding legacy. Lauren Elkin, author of Flâneuse: Women Walk the City, Professor Helen Abbott, University of Birmingham, and performance artist Dylan Read are also amongst the invited speakers.
