Revised fire safety arrangements and assembly points

Revised fire safety arragements and assembly points

The Physics Yard is now completely closed off to all pedestrian and vehicle access whilst the groundworks contractor Scudder takes possession of the site to complete a detailed scheme of works. During this time alternative fire safety arrangements will be in place as below.

New assembly area in Gordon Square

Staff and students will now also have a new assembly area of Gordon Square which will be evacuated to via the diagrams below. Also one area will be subject to change, as the fire escape route via the external staircase that leads to the Physics Yard will only be used on a short term basis in the area before a new route is installed by the contractor.

New fire escape routes during Physics Yard closure:

Physics / LCN Buildings
- fire escape route from main (east) stair discharging into the physics yard adjacent to the LCN building;

New Route - will be along the rear of LCN and into Stage Walk to South Quad.

Physics (LAB F10) Building - fire exit from Lab F10 mezzanine office leading onto Physics Yard has been removed from use (closed via risk assessment for the duration of the works).
New Route - down the stairs to lab F10 lobby and out via the lower ground floor corridor to escape stairs at either end.

Wilkins Building Lower Ground Floor - corner kitchen and offices by old Abacus offices on to North Colonnade area.
Temporary Route - as a temporary measure in an emergency evacuation. It is anticipated this will be for an interim period for approximately two weeks ahead of a temporary fire escape being put in place, at which time the new temporary route will be announced.

JBR, Bloomsbury Theatre, Library and Bloomsbury Fitness Centre - routes from the Jeremy Bentham Room (JBR), Bloomsbury Theatre, Library and Bloomsbury Fitness centre will use the external staircase into the Physics Yard.
Temporary Route - as a temporary measure in an emergency evacuation. It is anticipated this will be for an interim period for approximately two weeks ahead of a temporary fire escape being put in place, at which time the new temporary route will be announced.

GENERAL SAFETY

Wilkins Fire Activation - should the fire alarm activate in the Wilkins Building the works will be stopped by the contractor (if at all possible).  However, in the unlikely event of a real fire and escape is required through the site works area via the horded lines then please use these routes as any fire evacuation and the safety of occupants offsets the risk from the contractor's process.
