Module description

This module aims to familiarise students with the foundations of machine learning, including its theoretical and algorithmic aspects. The module covers important algorithmic learning paradigms and corresponding machine learning models that are widely used in practice, whilst placing special focus on the mathematical and statistical theories that provide their underpinnings.

Further details are available in the STAT0042 UCL Module Catalogue entry.

Prerequisite knowledge

STAT0042 is primarily intended for students within the Department of Statistical Science (including the MASS programmes). The academic prerequisite for these students, in addition to their (other) compulsory modules, is one of MATH0011 / STAT0040 / STAT0041 (UG), or STAT0028 (PGT).

For outside students, the following modules are considered a sufficient alternative prerequisite: one of COMP0015 / COMP0043, along with one of STAT0006 STAT0028

Registration process

STAT0042 is offered as an elective. Prospective elective students who have taken an appropriate combination of the alternative prerequisite modules listed above should simply register for STAT0042 on Portico and await a decision. Prospective elective students who have taken courses equivalent to the listed modules must additionally consult a member of staff in the Department of Statistical Science.
