STAT0011 Decision and Risk

Module description

This module aims to provide an introduction to the ideas underlying the calculation of risk from a Bayesian and frequentist standpoint, and the structure of rational, consistent decision making.

Prerequisite knowledge

STAT0011 is primarily intended for undergraduates within the Department of Statistical Science (including the MASS programmes) and also BSc / MSci Natural Sciences students following the Mathematics and Statistics stream. For these students, the academic prerequisites for this module are met through compulsory study earlier in their programme.

For outside students, the following modules are considered a sufficient alternative prerequisite: one of ECON0019 or MATH0057 or SESS0023 or STAT0003

Registration process

STAT0011 is specified as a formal option within the BSc Global Humanitarian Studies programme and for third year undergraduates from the Department of Mathematics. Any such student who has taken one of the alternative prerequisite modues listed above should simply register for STAT0011 on Portico and await a decision. Students from these programmes who have not taken one of the listed modules must additionally consult a member of staff in the Department of Statistical Science.

STAT0011 is also offered as an elective. Prospective elective students who have taken one of the alternative prerequisite modules listed above should simply register for STAT0011 on Portico and await a decision. Prospective elective students who have taken courses equivalent to the listed modules must additionally consult a member of staff in the Department of Statistical Science.

Other considerations

Besides the required module in introductory probability and statistics, it is desirable that students have some familiarity with the R statistical software package.
