3rd year Politics and Sociology with East European Studies

Yiannis Angelikas
Hello there, I’m Yiannis – a third year Politics and Sociology student. My decision to study at SSEES was mostly influenced by studying the region in A Level History, as well as my parents’ involvement in South-East European politics. I had never done sociology before; the way SSEES teaches ensured that everything was covered in the introductory modules – making it accessible to everyone. In addition to that, being a SSEES student in 2022 really taught me how to properly apply concepts in current affairs the moment they occur.
SSEES is a relatively small department within UCL; it feels more like a family – professors and tutors know us by our first names, whilst being able to interact with students from all over the world, with many different cultural backgrounds. SSEES also has its own departmental society; career events and embassy visits, as well as social are some of the events organised, where most – if not all – of us meet with each other and discuss issues affecting politics, history, and economics.
Lastly, we should not forget that SSEES is a school within UCL, one of the world’s biggest academic institutions. We are located in Bloomsbury in central London, which makes all UCL students easily approachable by the numerous multinational companies – more than 900 different employers and organisations attend UCL’s career events – and more than 90% of UCL’s students enter work within six months of graduating. I’m, thus, really happy with my choice to study at SSEES, and I cannot wait to see where this degree will take me!
