Research summary

My research sits within the intersection of International Relations and Foreign Policy Analysis, with a focus on US-Iran relations and Persian Gulf security. My doctoral thesis, and subsequent book, 'US Foreign Policy and the Iranian Revolution', explained the Cold War dynamics of US policy in Iran and provided a new perspective on the origins of the US-Iranian confrontation. My other work on this period of the Cold War appears in Diplomacy and Statecraft, Cold War History, and edited volumes on the Iran-Iraq War and post-conflict political transitions. I'm particularly interested in US perceptions of the Soviet threat in Iran and the wider Middle East. I have also recently published a book chapter surveying the political science and historical sociology literature on the domestic and international impact of the Iranian Revolution.

Alongside my academic research, I frequently write short essays and blogs on contemporary Iranian affairs. I joined SSEES in 2020 from the University of Plymouth, where I taught International Relations for six years. Prior to this, I spent three years as a full-time teaching fellow in the Department of International Relations at the London School of Economics. I was born in Birmingham and completed all my higher education at the University of Birmingham - History BA (2003), MPhil (2005), PhD (2011). I have held teaching positions at Warwick University and and the University of Nottingham and visiting scholarships at the University of Virginia and Carleton University.
