SSEES Society 2023

18 September 2023

As a new academic year begins, Stefan Lercher, President of SSEES Society, hopes to spread the word and encourage not only SSEES students to get involved, but also the wider UCL student community.

He says “All students at SSEES are automatically members of this society, but other students across UCL with an interest in the SSEES region are welcome to join too. We run a variety of events, including academic talks and panels covering everything from politics, culture and society in the Central & East European regions, plus career events and socials that are just for fun.”

SSEES Society represents one of the UK’s largest and most reputed educational institutions focusing on Central and Eastern Europe. Stefan continues “Our goal is to provide opportunities for all our students and members to learn more about the region, aiming to organise events that feel distinct from what is discovered in our university courses. This includes running expert debates on presently evolving issues and events to ensure an engaging experience alongside our studies.”

Our socials provide a space for students to enjoy their time at university. We do our best to include themes from the SSEES region so that students can get a feel for and learn about the region's rich culture. This includes socials for any type of student. Whether it's a relaxing pizza or movie night or something more high-energy. We try to make sure that there’s something for everyone to participate in so that they can meet all the wonderful people at SSEES.”

In addition to our events and socials, the SSEES Society is also the official body that represents our students' academic and educational interests within SSEES. He explains “Along with your Academic Representatives, our society is there to help resolve issues our students are facing within their academic life and raise them within our department.”
