Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski

The jury stated, "Intensive learning of the Polish language, studies and research in European archives and libraries made him (Richard) an outstanding expert on the history of Poland during the Enlightenment.”

The jury also paid attention to the book "Light and Flame. The Rebirth and Destruction of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1733-1795), which Prof Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski wrote about "how in the 18th century a state disappeared from the map that was not some minor principality or city-republic, but one of the largest states in Europe." The book was translated into Polish by Michał Ronikier; was published by Wydawnictwo Literackie in 2022.

"The English professor's engaging and revealing dissertation devoted to eighteenth-century Poland, more precisely: the states of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth refers to the best traditions of European history writing, to the times when historical writers were able to combine knowledge with research intuition and artistry, when science was close to literature," the jury members emphasised in their announcement.

The jury of the ZPPnO Literary Award includes: chairwoman Regina Wasiak-Taylor, president of ZPPnO; priest prof. Janusz Ihnatowicz, Houston, USA; Dr. Aleksandra Ziółkowska-Boehm, Wilmington, USA and Dr. Adam Wierciński, University of Opole. The awards ceremony will take place in London in February 2024.
