Doreen Warriner

A new British film features former SSEES professor Doreen Warriner (1904-1972) in a major role. One Life, is a biographical drama film about the British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton MBE (played by Anthony Hopkins), who saved hundreds of children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia during the Second World War.

Doreen Warriner was a development economics professor at the School between 1938 and 1966 and interrupted her academic activities to travel to Prague to help refugees escape from the Nazi-occupied city. Her voluntary work earned her an OBE. She went on to become the lead figure in the Prague office of BCRC (the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia), and it was Warriner who alerted the attention of Nicholas Winton to the plight of refugee children.

A plaque honouring Doreen's work is housed on the fourth floor of the SSEES building, unveiled in 2020.

One Life will be in cinemas from 1 January 2024.
