SSEES staff awarded runners up at Widening Participation CoP Awards

14 December 2022

Ramona Gonczol and Dr Yordanka Velkova were awarded runners up in the category of Schools and Community Award at the 2022 UCL Widening Participation Community of Practice Awards on 8 December 2022.

Ramona Gonczol and Yordanka Velkova receive a certificate for their Widening Participation work

The award was in recognition of Ramona and Yordanka's work on the PEEL (Proficiency in East European Languages) project, which designs entry level test for Romanian and Bulgarian heritage speakers comparable with GCSE examination. This year, the project has worked with a school in north Wales with a significant cohort of heritage speakers and aims to expand to other schools nationally, including in east London. The programme focuses on delivering certifiable language qualifications to heritage speakers and on increasing participation in higher education among this group, which is currently underrepresented at this level, both at UCL and within the UK.

The Widening Participation Community of Practice (CoP) held the awards ceremony, the first of its kind at UCL, to recognise the outstanding staff at UCL who dedicate their time and energy to the Widening Participation (WP) practice area.

Ramona and Yordanka were awarded runners up in the Schools and Communities Award category, which rewards individuals, project or team that has worked towards building strong relationships or links for WP working with schools or the wider community at UCL.

Congratulations to Ramona and Yordanka!
