Silver Green Impact Award 2021-22

16 August 2022

SSEES Evergreens received the Silver Green Impact Award 2021-22.

Silver Badge Green Impact

On 6 July, UCL celebrated 10 years of climate action at the annual Sustainability Awards Ceremony, recognising students, staff and researchers who have been making change possible at UCL and beyond. We are very pleased to announce that SSEES Evergreens Team received the Silver Green Impact Award! This also means, that there will be 2 trees planted on behalf of SSEES Evergreens Team at The UCL Grove which is located in the protected sites in the Scottish Highlands, where they will create homes for wildlife and forests for the future.

Green Impact is a United Nations award-winning programme designed to support environmentally and socially sustainable practice in your organisation. In 2020-21, we received the Bronze Award and since then we have been making various efforts at the School to make more sustainable actions and support UCL’s Sustainability Strategy. This year we also closely worked with 3 Sustainability Ambassadors. A few things we have implemented include:

  • having a dedicated section in the SSEES Fortnightly Newsletter that is distributed to all SSEES staff, students and a wider public
  • sharing relevant information with SSEES staff via a dedicated Teams channel
  • helping to promote UCL-wide sustainability initiatives on social media and by installing posters
  • participating in the Big Easter and Christmas Switch-offs by sending reminders to staff & students
  • purchasing copy paper which is 100% recycled and ensuring UCL preferred suppliers are used for purchases and delivery services, whenever possible
  • setting our printers to print double-sided by default and copy double-sided when possible
  • providing vegan and vegetarian food when ordering catering for meetings and parties
  • including an environmental statement in the job descriptions of all new hires: "The staff member has a responsibility to carry out their duties in a resource-efficient way and actively support UCL’s Sustainability Strategy, policies and objectives within the remit of their role."
  • buying eco-friendly washing-up liquid and sponges in bulk containers to reduce waste
  • introducing recycling bin for coffee pods in staff kitchens
