To celebrate the European Day of Languages on 26 September, Parliament Hill School invited five language teachers from UCL to give tasters of their languages.
Pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 were taught Dutch (Christine Sas), Finnish (Riitta Valijarvi), Polish (Urszula Chowaniec), Romanian (Ramona Gonczöl) and Russian (Lydia Buravova). Event organiser Terry King gave a talk entitled “Why Study Languages?” emphasising the high employability of language graduates.
The link with Parliament Hill School continues this term with online mentoring of AS level language students by UCL undergraduates. This is part of the Near Peers project, in which AS students from under-represented London schools communicate online with undergraduates in the language they are studying. UCL undergraduates are currently being recruited for this project.
