Last month SSEES Acting Director Slavo Radošević attended a week-long international symposium at Peking University.

The symposium and summer school on New Structural Economics and Development in Africa, was held at the National School of Development, Peking University. The gathering brought together speakers from France, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, United States as well as the United Kingdom and China. Also speaking were representatives from the World Bank, OECD and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

Participants of the summer school were from around the world, including many students from Africa as well as PhD students from UCL. The sixty delegates heard papers ranging from the economic cooperation between China and Africa to strategies and constraints for economic development. Slavo Radošević discussed the topic ‘Industrial and technology restructuring in transition economies: lessons for Africa’ and also gave a lecture to participants of the summer school. The symposium included a field trip to Hebei province to visit an industrial cluster.

The National School of Development is the leading Centre of Excellence in China in the area of development policy.
