Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?
For years I had shown great interest in the Western Balkans. It has always be my dream to study South Slavonic languages and acquiring methodologies to conduct in-depth research in that region - I believed that UCL SSEES would provide me with these opportunities. And for sure, it does!

What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?
I am studying MRes East European Studies. It is a two-year programme. The reason why I chose this course is that it allows me to study a certain Slavonic language for two years as I want to be proficient in at least one Slavonic language.

How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?
My favourite module is Slovene! I am enthusiastic about learning Slavonic languages, and my teacher, Mrs Maja Rančigaj Beneš, is so friendly! I highly recommend every SSEES student to attend her modules.

How does postgraduate study differ from undergraduate study?
I was doing a completely different programme in undergraduate study: urban planning. So I would say that there was a lot of coursework required. Now I am spending more time on reading and writing essays. Although the modules are intense, I really enjoy learning new things!

How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?
My Slovene teacher runs the module just for me as I am the only student in this module, which is really a special experience to have a one-to-one class at UCL. In addition to this, all teachers were willing to provide me with assistance when I turned to them for help. I really appreciated it.

What about the social life?
SSEES organises various activities for socialising: meetings, seminars and social events. There are always opportunities to get to know new people. I would say I have already socialised a lot in classes! It is so thrilling to have so many friendly classmates who share the same common interests as me. Thanks to SSEES for giving me a chance to get to know them.

What are your future plans/aspirations?
I hope to further my studies in the same field as my current course after graduating from my MRes degree. I might go to a CEE country in order to conduct more fieldwork, preferably in Slovenia.

Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?
If you are enthusiastic about any of the countries in Eastern Europe or Central Europe, you will not be disappointed in taking this course!
