Language and Culture Handbook (BA Ukrainian and East European Studies)

Ukrainian and East European Studies BA

  • You must register for exactly 120 credits per year of study;
  • You must have taken and passed 90 credits of Level 6 modules by the end of the final year;
  • You are not permitted to take more than 150 credits of Level 4 modules over the course of your programme;
  • The Year Abroad must be passed
  • All language modules stated as "compulsory" in a given year are non-condonable and MUST be passed by the second attempt in order for a student to progress to the next year.

Year One

Compulsory 30 credits in Ukrainian language:
 
EITHER: if you are a beginner or near beginner
•    SEEU0001 - Ukrainian Language Level 1 (30 credits)

OR: if you are at A Level standard or equivalent.
•    SEEU0007 - Ukrainian Language Level 2a Comprehension (15 credits)
•    SEEU0009 - Ukrainian Language Level 2b Production (15 credits)

Compulsory literature/culture modules - 30 credits
•    SEEE0009 - War, Trauma and Memory (15 Credits)
•    SEEE0013 - Literature and Memory (15 Credits)

Optional modules - 60 credits

To be selected from available Level 4 or 5 optional modules in SSEES or other UCL departments (some examples of SSEES modules are given below though this list is not exhaustive):

Any Level 4 or 5 module ELCS**** (delivered by the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS) (15 credits)

Year Two

In your second year, you must choose a total of 120 credits.

Compulsory Modules

 30 credits in Ukrainian language:

Choose Level 2a/2b or Level 3a/3b according to which level you have already taken in Year 1.

EITHER: if you took Level 1 in the previous year
•    SEEU0007 - Ukrainian Language Level 2a Comprehension (15 credits)
•    SEEU0009 - Ukrainian Language Level 2b Production (15 credits)

OR: if you took Level 2a and 2b in the previous year
•    SEEU0011 - Ukrainian Language Level 3a - Comprehension (15 credits) 
•    SEEU0013 - Ukrainian Language Level 3b - Production (15 credits)

30 Credits in Ukrainian culture
•    SEEU0017 - Ukrainian Culture and Text A
•    SEEU0027 - Ukrainian Culture and Text B

Optional Modules - 60 credits
60 credits from available optional modules in SSEES or other UCL departments

Year Abroad

Your third year is spent abroad on a Ukrainian-language and culture placement, taking 120 credits. You will normally spend this year studying at a university, but alternatives, such as work placements, may be possible. Further details are contained in the Year Abroad Handbook. Year Four

By the end of Year 4 you need to have taken a minimum of 90 credits in Level 6 modules over Years 2 and 4 together.

Compulsory 30 credits in Ukrainian language:

EITHER: if you took Level 2a and 2b in Year 2
•    SEEU0011 - Ukrainian Language Level 3a - Comprehension (15 credits) 
•    SEEU0013 - Ukrainian Language Level 3b - Production (15 credits)


OR: if you took Level 3a and 3b in Year 2
•    SESS0053 Freestanding Dissertation (30 credits)

30 credits in Ukrainian culture:
•    SESS0004: - The Making of Modern Ukraine (30 credits)

Optional Modules - 60 Credits
60 credits from available optional modules in SSEES or other UCL departments
