Language and Culture Handbook (BA Czech (with Slovak) and East European Studies)

Czech (with Slovak) and East European Studies BA

  • You must register for exactly 120 credits per year of study;
  • You must have taken and passed 90 credits of Level 6 modules by the end of the final year;
  • You are not permitted to take more than 150 credits of Level 4 modules over the course of your programme;
  • The Year Abroad must be passed

Year One

Compulsory 30 credits in  language:
 
EITHER: if you are a beginner or near beginner
•    SEEC0001 -Czech Language Level 1 (30 credits)

OR: if you are at A Level standard or equivalent.
•    SEEC0005 -Czech Language Level 2a: Comprehension (15 credits)
•    SEEC0007 -Czech Language Level 2b: Production (15 credits)

Compulsory literature/culture modules - 30 credits
•    SEEE0009 - War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema (15 Credits)
•    SEEE0013 - Literature and Memory (15 Credits)

Optional modules - 60 credits

To be selected from available Level 4 or 5 optional modules in SSEES or other UCL departments. Please refer to the main modules webpage: View SSEES Undergraduate Modules

Some examples of SSEES modules are given below though this list is not exhaustive, and please refer to the main modules webpage above to check which modules are running or not running:

Any Level 4 or 5 module ELCS**** (delivered by the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS) (15 credits)

Year Two

In your second year, you must choose a total of 120 credits.

Compulsory 30 credits in  language:

Choose Level 2a and 2b or Level 3a and 3b according to which level you have already taken in Year 1.

EITHER: if you took Level 1 in the previous year
•    SEEC0005 -Czech Language Level 2a: Comprehension (15 credits)
•    SEEC0007 -Czech Language Level 2b: Production (15 credits)
OR: if you took Level 2a and 2b in the previous year
•    SEEC0010 - Czech Level 3a - Comprehension (15 credits)
•    SEEC0012 - Czech Level 3b - Production (15 credits)

Compulsory literature/culture modules - 30 credits
•   SEEC0009 - Introduction to Czech Literature and Culture (15 credits)
•   SEEE0020 - Writing from the Other Europe (15 credits)

Optional Modules - 60 credits
60 credits from available optional modules at Level 5 in SSEES or other UCL departments.

Year Abroad

Your third year is spent abroad on a Czech language and culture placement, taking 120 credits. You will normally spend this year studying at a university, but alternatives, such as work placements, may be possible. Further details are contained in the Year Abroad Handbook. Year Four

By the end of Year 4 you need to have taken a minimum of 90 credits in Level 6 modules over Years 2 and 4 together.

Compulsory Modules

EITHER: if you took Level 2a and 2b in Year 2
•    SEEC0010 - Czech Level 3a - Comprehension (15 credits)
•    SEEC0012 - Czech Level 3a - Production (15 credits)

OR: if you took Level 3a and 3b in Year 2
•    SESS0053 Free Standing Dissertation (30 credits)

Compulsory literature/culture modules - 30 credits:
•    SEEC0014: - Czech Literature 3 (30 credits)

Optional Modules - 60 Credits
60 credits from available optional modules in SSEES or other UCL departments
