Rethinking The Legacy of Homo Sovieticus: What is Conceptual and What is Real in Today’s Russia?

This conversation will be based on the main ideas of the book The Afterlife of the Soviet Man: Rethinking Homo Sovieticus (Bloomsbury 2023) enhanced by the new public agenda and thinking forged by Russia’s war with Ukraine.

In the book, Sharafutdinova follows the lives and ideals of several anti-communist writers and dissidents, who have encountered communism and have developed powerful ideas about the effects of the communist system and ideology on people living in communist states. The intellectual biographies of Cheslaw Milosz, Georgy Markov, Alexander Zinoviev and Vladimir Bukovsky highlight the historical and political contingencies underpinning the evolution of their thinking. The analytical deconstruction of Yuri Levada’s intellectual legacy exposes the outdated theoretical foundations of the concept of ‘simple Soviet man’ that provided an empirical and scientific grounding to the term homo sovieticus.

The reality of Russo-Ukrainian war posits a new agenda of looking at Russia and the homo post-sovieticus through the lens of decolonization, unveiling long-lasting and historically embedded structures of ethnic/racial inequality.

Доклад будет основан на идеях книги "Посмертная жизнь: новое осмысление Homo Sovieticus" (Bloomsbury 2023), в свете войны России с Украиной. В книге Г. Шарафутдинова прослеживает жизнь и идеалы нескольких писателей- диссидентов, разработавших важные идеи о влиянии коммунистической системы и идеологии на людей, живущих в коммунистических государствах. В интеллектуальных биографиях Чеслава Милоша, Георгия Маркова, Александра Зиновьева и Владимира Буковского освещаются исторические и политические обстоятельства, лежащие в основе эволюции их мышления. Аналитическая деконструкция интеллектуального наследия Юрия Левады раскрывает устаревшие теоретические основания концепции "простого советского человека", которая дала эмпирическое и научное обоснование термину homo sovieticus.

Реальность российско-украинской войны ставит перед исследователями задачу взглянуть на Россию и homo post-sovieticus через призму деколонизации, выявляя долговременные и исторически укоренившиеся структуры этнического/расового неравенства.
