Maria Todorova will talk about her latest book, The Lost World of Socialists at Europe’s Margins: Imagining Utopia, 1870s–1920s (Bloomsbury Academic 2020) She will discuss the ‘golden age’ of the socialist idea, exploring the period of the Second International. It will examine the promise for an alternative socialist utopia, moving beyond the traditional historiographical emphasis on ideology, into intersections of spaces, generations, genders, ideas and feelings, and different flows of historical time.

Following the talk, there will be a Q&A session. Participants are encouraged to read the book before the session. For UCL scholars, the book has been made available in electronic format via our library in anticipation of the event.

About the Speaker

Maria Todorova
Maria Todorova is Edward William and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of the international bestseller Imagining the Balkans (1997), which continues to provide the paradigm for the field, a prolific historian of Southeastern Europe and indefatigable author and editor in the field of memory studies.

Our activities are supported by the SSEES Library, whose holdings on South-East Europe comprise some 50,000 volumes including, notably, the Moses Gaster collection of old Romanian books, the collection bequeathed by Sir Arthur Evans, the Seton-Watson archive, and the wartime archive of King Zog of Albania.
