Sports Dentistry: The Changing Role of the Sports Dentist

Overview

This one-day course is designed for general dental practitioners with an interest in sports dentistry and who may treat athletes as patients. The aims of the course include:

  • dealing with dental trauma both in surgery and at the sporting venue
  • designing a preventative approach for athletes
  • establishing the link between oral health and athletic performance
  • predicting what the future holds for sports dentistry

As the only provider of sports dentistry CPD in the UK, this course is a unique opportuntiy for general dental practitioners to come together and explore this bespoke speciality.

The course is run by the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London.

Who this course is for

This course is aimed at general dental practitioners who have an interest in sports dentistry or who may already be treating elite or recreational athletes. General dental practitioners already involved with professional sports are welcome to participate in this course to update their current practices.

Course content

This course programme covers:

  • dental trauma in a sporting arena
  • the use of various preventative practices
  • the role of research in supporting athletes and their oral health

Teaching and structure

Course content will be delivered face-to-face over one day around four seminar sessions. There will be ample opportunity for discussions and questions from participants.

Certificates and assessment

You'll earn 6.5 hours of verifiable CPD and a certificate of attendance when you complete the course.

Entry requirements

You must hold an approved dental qualification.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

  • deal with sporting dental trauma, including patients with concussion
  • develop a preventative programme for both elite and recreational athletes that you treat in your practice
  • offer your services in sports clubs as a dentist with a special interest in the oral health of athletes

Cost

The standard fee is £420.

Quality controls

All Eastman teachers are experienced professionals. You will be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching and value for money.

Prof Peter Fine

Prof Peter Fine

Peter has been a general dental practitioner for over 40 years before becoming a part-time lecturer in CPD at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in 2008. He currently has the grade of Associate Clinical Professor (Teaching) and regularly teaches on the Restorative Dental Practice programme Year 1 (Certificate). His main role on the Restorative Dental Practice programme is to supervise the MSc research students during their research year. This involves developing appropriate research projects, designing the research protocols and supervising the students undertaking the projects.

He has been the lead for sports dentistry courses at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute for 8 years, developing the subject from treating trauma in sportsmen and women to understanding the dental needs of athletes and the role that general dental practitioners can play in supporting athletes with respect to dental and oral health.

Dr John Haughey

Dr John Haughey

Practising in Ireland, John provides sports dentistry support to multiple athletes, including Olympians, professional team sport athletes and professional individual sport athletes. He's provided sports dentistry support for major sporting competitions, including international competitions. 

John researched the effect of lower jaw position on athletic performance, while completing his MSc in neuromuscular therapy, and contributed a chapter to the sports dentistry book Sports Dentistry: Principles and Practice. He is a Clinical Teaching Fellow (Sports Dentistry & Oral Health) for UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
