Sports Dentistry: the changing role of the sports dentist

This one-day, face-to-face course will introduce you to the concept of sports dentistry and explore the evolving role of the sports dentist.

      It's run by the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London which has a broad range of continuing professional development (CPD) short courses. These provide hands-on training from experienced staff in dedicated facilities.

      Course aims

      This course aims to look at:

      • the role that the sports dentist can play within the sports medicine team
      • how to work alongside elite athletes

      Course content and structure

      The day runs from approximately 9:30am to 5pm. There'll be a combination of lecture/seminar teaching and hands-on practical sessions.

      You'll learn:

      • whether to consider athletes differently to any other patient
      • about the role that the dentist can play in elite sport
      • an understanding of emergency trauma
      • about the role of nutrition in the care of athletes


        Morning lecture: introduction to sports dentistry and why we need sports dentists

        Afternoon practical: emergency trauma treatment

        Afternoon lecture: oral health and performance

        Learning outcomes

        By the end of the course, you should be able to:

        • understand the role of the sports dentist
        • appreciate the role that the sports dentist plays within sports medicine
        • have a better understanding of emergency trauma treatment, and what constitutes an emergency
        • understand the principles of teamwork within the sports medicine team
        • appreciate the link between oral health and athletic performance

        Who this course is for

        You'll need to hold an approved dental qualification.

        CPD points and certificate

        You'll earn 6.5 hours verifiable CPD and a certificate of attendance.

        Quality controls

        All Eastman teachers are experienced professionals. You'll be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching and value for money.

        Dr John Haughey

        Practising in Ireland, John provides sports dentistry support to multiple athletes, including Olympians, professional team sport athletes and professional individual sport athletes. He's provided sports dentistry support for major competitions including internationally.

        John researched the effect of the lower jaw position on athletic performance, while completing his MSc in neuromuscular therapy, and contributed a chapter to the sports dentistry book Sports Dentistry: Principles and Practice. He's a Clinical Teaching Fellow (Sports Dentistry & Oral Health) for UCL Eastman Dental Institute and helps deliver the Sports Dentistry: Oral Health in Sport MSc there.
