US Student Financial Aid at UCL

UCL participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans). This is the main US Federal funding available to US students in the UK.

Please note

The below information relates to the 2021/22 academic year.  We will begin assessing loan applications from June 2021.

If you are looking to apply for Direct Loans for the academic year 2020/21, please let us know via email to us-cdn-loans@ucl.ac.uk. For Direct Loans applications for the 2020/21 academic year (ending September 2021) the deadline to fill out your FAFSA form is June 30, 2021

You should follow the instructions given here when applying for Direct Loans for study at UCL and note that UCL will not know that you wish to apply for Direct Loans until you submit an application to the Student Funding Office at UCL as described here.

UCL’s Direct Loan federal code is G06695 (or 00669500), we are listed as "University of London: University College" on FAFSA and as "University College London" on StudentLoans.gov

For the 2021/22 academic year, you can apply at any point during your studies as long as you are still enrolled on the course and you apply before the 2021/22 FAFSA deadline (June 30, 2022).

Please note that the Institute of Education is no longer a separate organisation, so you cannot use their federal code - you must use the code for UCL.

Programme eligibility for Direct Loans

Most degree programmes at UCL are eligible for Direct Loans, however, some are not.

Ineligible programmes include all non-degree programmes (e.g. PG Dip, PG Cert); Distance Learning programmes (where study mode is 'Distance Learning', 'Non-Resident' or 'Mixed-mode'); programmes based in the UCL Medical School, and some programmes with a taught element offered at non-UCL sites.

Students will not be eligible for Federal Direct Loans whilst on any part of a programme based in the US, including study leave, unless the total number of credits taken in the US is no more than 25% of the total programme credits, if it is during the writing-up period of a PhD or if the programme is temporarily being delivered remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the large number of courses offered by UCL it is your responsibility to ensure that the Student Funding Office is made aware of any element of your course which may contravene the US federal regulations. See the Terms and Conditions tab for further details.
