Chemical Safety Sub-Committee: terms of reference

Purpose
The Work Health and Safety Committee (WHSC) has established the Chemical Safety Sub-Committee (CSSC) to make recommendations regarding chemical safety. The CSSC will advise the WHSC when a topic is or could be considered a significant hazard.
Organisation and meetings
- Make recommendations to the WHSC for final consultation and decisions via submission of a paper and addition to the WHSC agenda.
- Take and respond to any particular or general direction given by the WHSC.
- Agree annually with the WHSC the scope of the topic covered by the CSSC including the requirement to establish or continue any work groups.
- Review the terms of reference annually and document the discussion and action required.
- Provide quarterly and annual reports to the WHSC.
- Set the number of meetings per year.
- Set the number of members and number required for a quorum.
- Set, if required, any additional training or competence requirements for members including the Chair.
- Set key performance measures.
Duties and responsibilities
- Advise on all matters relating to chemical safety at any site owned, rented or controlled by UCL.
- Advise on all matters relating to work with hazardous chemicals including the storage by any person employed by UCL, including students.
- To propose, develop, monitor and report on the implementation and effectiveness of UCL’s policy with respect to work activities with hazardous chemicals.
- To cover the following topics:
- Chemical Safety Guidance.
- Best practice at UCL.
- Stock/cataloguing systems.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Waste management (including spills procedure).
