Manual handling and lifting training
This course is recommended for UCL staff who carry out manual handling and lifting activities at work.
Course description
This practical training course is aimed at staff who may undertake manual handling operations, including the transporting of a load of items by lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof by hand or by bodily force.
As this is a practical course, please wear appropriate loose-fitting clothing (preferably trousers) and refer to the Health Checklist to confirm that you are fit to undertake this training (you can access this via MyLearning).
All safety instructor-led training courses are delivered by our team of safety experts.
Objectives
This instructor-led course will cover the risks associated with manual handling and how to ensure that appropriate control measures are put in place.
- The "anatomy" of the back and causes of back pain
- Assessing the lift
- Hazard spotting
- Mechanical handling aids
- Demonstration of correct lifting techniques
- The lifting of objects under the guidance of a competent instructor

Cost
Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course. Non-attendance at first aid courses will incur a higher non-attendance fee.
