Safety Alert - Risk of overheating in specific Smart-UPS battery cartridges
25 January 2024
This Safety Alert concerns a potential safety hazard with certain 192V battery cartridges used in Smart-UPS online systems.

What happened?
Schneider Electric has identified a potential safety concern with 192V battery cartridges manufactured between 6 May 2019 and 10 May 2020. These batteries may contain an internal nonconformance that could lead to localised overheating, smoke, soot and thermal damage. In rare cases, this could result in property damage or bodily injury.
While ISD will be taking steps to address this issue for ISD-owned UPS units, your immediate attention is required if your department has purchased any UPS units independently.
Action to be taken
- If your department has purchased any UPS units outside of ISD's procurement channels, you will need to confirm the model and serial number of each unit.
- If your UPS unit appears on the supplier's list, please stop using it immediately and follow the supplier's instructions for obtaining a replacement battery.
- How to identify if the battery module that is inside your UPS/external battery pack is affected.
