Reporting safety concerns is getting an upgrade

30 October 2023

A new application for reporting safety concerns and incidents will be added to the Inside UCL app in November. It will take just three minutes to log a hazard or dangerous situation using a mobile device or computer. Please help us spread the news!

A new application for reporting safety concerns and incidents will be added to the Inside UCL app in the coming days. It will take you just three minutes to log a hazard or dangerous situation and less than 10 minutes to report an injury. The app is straightforward to use, you can attach photos easily and it works well on mobile devices.

What can be reported using the new app?

  • Hazards: A hazard in the workplace may cause harm to a person or cause damage. Examples are a trailing cable which could cause a tripping hazard or an overloaded shelf which could collapse on passers-by.
  • Near misses: Unsafe situations where nobody gets hurt. A near miss event does not lead to but does have the potential to cause injury. A person tripping over a trailing cable but catching themselves before falling or a shelf of books collapsing moments after a person walked past are both examples of near misses.
  • Injury: A person was injured at work.
  • Damage: An unsafe event caused damage to equipment or buildings.
  • Violent behaviour: Witnessing or experiencing violent behaviour at work.

Why should I report hazards and near misses at work?

    • It may prevent injury to a person in a similar situation.
    • It may prevent damage to equipment or buildings.
    • It allows UCL to identify hot spots and patterns of unsafe conditions across the University. These need to be addressed to prevent further safety incidents.

    Action to take

We are encouraging people to make reports and departments may see an increase in the number of hazard observations and near misses reported. For those of you who manage incidents, nothing will change. Incidents will still be managed in riskNET.

It is important that departments act when concerns and incidents are reported, to encourage a positive safety awareness culture among colleagues and the wider UCL community.
