Asbestos warning labels

29 July 2021

Asbestos is usually safe unless it's damaged or disturbed.

To help prevent accidental damage, asbestos warning labels are applied to asbestos containing materials ("ACM") considered to be a risk. Left alone, it isn’t dangerous so if you see a warning label, don't touch it.

The warning labels are not necessarily attached to the ACM itself. For example, if the label is attached to a ceiling tile it does not mean that the tile contains asbestos, it could be that the ACM is in the ceiling void above the ceiling tile. Another example is warning labels attached to doors – some older doors have ACM sandwiched within the door panels for fire prevention purposes.

Lower risk materials such as floor tiles, textured coatings and cement materials are not routinely labelled.

UCL Asbestos Team

If a building contains asbestos, a record of its condition and whereabouts is recorded on the UCL Asbestos Register by the Asbestos Team.

The Asbestos Team is responsible for managing asbestos materials in UCL's buildings and carries out annual inspections to ensure that ACMs are left in situ and do not pose a health risk to employees, students and visitors.
