New videos on cascading crises, organisational resilience and black sky thinking

The guest lectures by Dr. Gianluca Pescaroli in two recent international workshops are now available online.

Titled Extreme Events and Organisational Resilience: Black Sky Thinking, the first lecture, delivered in January 2019 at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, introduces the main components of Black Sky Thinking, highlighting the existing challenges in the management of cascading effects of power failures and blackouts. It presents a variety of lessons learned through a research conducted at the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR), in collaboration with London’s stakeholders. The lecture concludes by recommending several practical suggestions aimed at improving organizational resilience and continuity management. The second lecture, titled One Thing Leads to Another: Being Ready for Cascading Crises and Disasters, was presented in November 2018 in a workshop held at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. It was aimed for an audience of end-users from both the public and private sectors. The lecture focuses on the practical relevance of considering “secondary emergencies” and “escalations” in strategic emergency planning, highlighting implications for continuity management. Lastly, the third lecture, titled Understanding Cascading Disasters: A Framework for Analysis and delivered at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology provides an overview of some theoretical literature on cascading disasters and emergency planning developed at the IRDR. The lecture is aimed for an academic and research community as it defines further areas of academic collaboration.
