COP27 Application Process

We are currently in the process of preparing our UCL team to attend COP27 in November 2022. If you would like to join the UCL group please follow the instructions below.

Please complete this form if you would like to attend COP27 on behalf of UCL by 12noon on Friday 2 September: https://forms.office.com/r/iMpJkPk8Dy

The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the UNFCCC will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 7-18 November 2022. Building on COP26 Success UCL will be organising a group to represent the University at COP27. This will be our only UCL allocation and we will have very limited places, therefore all interested UCL colleagues and early career researchers must go through this process if they wish to be considered for a UCL place. Once UCL places have been allocated we will not be able to source additional UCL tickets.

Tickets will be allocated for either week one, or week two- if you have a preference please indicate this during the application process when asked.

The responses from this form will be assessed by a cross UCL panel overseen by the Environment Domain and Sustainable UCL teams. Tickets will then be allocated based on the scoring from this process.

Colleagues representing UCL will be assessed on:

  • Motivation, interest and commitment to representing UCL at COP27, including a demonstration of awareness of/engagement with areas of climate and environmental research and activity across the University;
  • The relevance of research expertise/role at UCL and how this aligns to key areas of interest for COP27 (find out more here https://cop27.eg/en/Conference#presidency-programme);
  • Their promotion of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in climate related spaces and beyond and how they will champion our breadth and diversity of research and voices at UCL.

We believe that success is built on the diversity of our community, therefore we would like to encourage applications from a wide range of colleagues, particularly those who identify as belonging to one of more under represented group(s) at UCL / the wider climate research space.

Experience of outreach and attendance at COP previously is not an essential requirement, however those selected must have a willingness to participate in relevant pre-event training.

At least one ticket will be allocated to an early career researcher, this includes PhD students, PDRAs and early career lecturers/researchers, please indicate on your application if you fit this category.

By applying for a UCL place you are committing to represent UCL (and yourself) at COP27, this will include attending pre event training and discussion events, contributing to UCL outputs and communications during your time at COP and post COP evaluation and activities. Please only apply if you are willing to participate more widely as part of UCL's team.

Travel and accommodation support is available where necessary, please read the information in section 2 below.

If you cannot apply online, or require this application in an alternative format, please contact Dr Becca Burns on environment@ucl.ac.uk

Please note we sadly cannot accept applications from undergraduate or masters students via this route and are currently exploring other opportunities for engagement with COP27.

If you have sourced a ticket to COP27 from another organisation please get in touch with the Sustainable UCL team via sustainableucl@ucl.ac.uk

We are aiming to let applicants know of the outcome mid September.

Accommodation and Travel Information

We do not want lack of funding to be a barrier for COP27 attendance, therefore Sustainable UCL have a limited fund to support travel and accommodation costs for colleagues where departmental funding is not available. Please indicate if this will be required below, this will not be seen by the judging panel.

We do kindly ask that where you have access to a budget that could support your travel and accommodation that you use this to help preserve funds for those who need to access them.

To assist with accommodation arrangements, regardless of your travel funding route, UCL has reserved a number of hotel rooms close to the conference venue to aid collaboration among the UCL delegation and create a UCL base.
