PErsonalised Treatment packages for Adults With Learning disabilities who display aggression in community settings (PETAL) is a NIHR-funded programme that began in April 2020.
Aggression in adults with learning disabilities is common and persistent over time. Moderate to severe aggression is considered a public health problem. It is a major reason for emergency care and admission to psychiatric hospitals and can significantly reduce the mental, and physical well-being and overall quality of life of the individual and their family/paid carers.
The PETAL therapy aims to develop a personalised multicomponent approach to explore the response of adults with learning disabilities who display aggression to the PETAL therapy alongside usual care compared to usual care alone in the NHS.
