Entry requirements

First degree

A minimum of a lower second-class UK Bachelor’s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in Mathematics, or mathematical content of 50% or more.

A levels

No specific subjects required.

GCSEs

English Language and Mathematics at grade C or 5. We do not accept "applied" or "additional" GCSE subjects. Applicants who do not offer a GCSE in English Language or Mathematics may demonstrate an equivalent standard by completing a test via Equivalency Testing or A Star Equivalency and achieving at least a grade 5. For Mathematics, equivalency tests in Mathematics Foundation or Mathematics Higher with grade 5 are accepted. BTEC, Functional Skills or Access course qualifications are not accepted in place of GCSEs.

School experience

We recommend that you aim to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview.

Skills tests

Trainees will be assured against a set of fundamental Mathematics and English skills by the end of their teacher training.

Equivalent standard

Applicants who do not offer a GCSE in English Language, Science or Mathematics may demonstrate an equivalent standard by completing a test at www.equivalencytesting.com or A Star Equivalency and achieving at least a grade 5.

Relevant experience and background

Applicants whose qualifications are of a lower standard may be admitted if they can demonstrate an appropriate academic background and experience in the relevant field.

DBS and occupational health

If you are made an offer you will be required to successfully complete Occupational Health and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure checks. The Occupational Health Check is £77, and depending on your DBS requirements, there may be an additional fee of £12.75 if you can submit your DBS Enhanced Disclosure check via a UK Post Office. These checks are required to ensure you meet the Department for Education’s requirements for physical and mental health to teach, as well as assessing your suitability for access to children and vulnerable adults. About this course

The PGCE mathematics programme aims to develop critical understanding of the nature of mathematics and its position in the school curriculum. Student teachers engage with research evidence and theories of learning in order to make sense of practice they observe in schools. They explore how teaching approaches can help learners develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills and cultivate enjoyment of mathematics.

Who this course is for

The Secondary PGCE full-time programme is suited to those wishing to gain Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) for teaching in a UK maintained (state-funded) school and who have fulfilled the appropriate entry requirements.

What this course will give you

We maintain a strong focus throughout the programme on the teaching and learning of mathematics. Through the careful planning and evaluation of lessons, student teachers are supported in developing their own classroom practice and becoming research-informed reflective practitioners.

The PGCE Mathematics tutors are skilled classroom practitioners with extensive experience of teaching and leadership in secondary schools. They are also currently engaged in research in mathematics education. The programme draws regularly on the wider range of expertise in mathematics education available within IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society.

The school-based experience provides an opportunity to try out new ideas and develop successful classroom practice, supported by experienced mentors in schools. Student teachers benefit from the mutual support provided by others in the cohort with whom they are able to share experiences and ideas through regular group discussion.

The teacher you want to be

IOE's excellent reputation helps ensure that graduates of the PGCE Mathematics programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges in London and further afield. Almost all student teachers secure their first teaching post by the time they complete the programme.  Many PGCE Mathematics graduates become a head of department or head of year within 2-5 years, frequently progressing to senior leadership in schools. Several are now headteachers. Others have developed their careers by becoming lead teachers in the classroom, engaging in further study and research or by writing, blogging and advising other teachers.

Employability

Most graduates of this programme go on to work as mathematics teachers in schools across London and further afield. Others become advisers, consultants providers of continuing professional development, researchers or teacher educators in universities.

Accreditation

Students who successfully complete this programme will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Structure

The Mathematics PGCE is taught via keynote lectures, subject studies seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at IOE and through two placements at partnership schools. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, written academic assignments and a portfolio of key assessments (which is closely linked to the Teachers' Standards).

Modules

Full-time

You will undertake two modules at level 7 (Masters level) of 30 credits each and one Professional Practice module at level 6. The level 7 credits can be carried forward onto some full Masters programmes at IOE (check individual programme requirements).

When you are not undertaking face-to-face teaching, you will be undertaking over 120 days of Teacher Training in various Partnership Schools.

Please note that the list of modules given here is indicative. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability is subject to change.

Students undertake two Master's-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totalling 60 credits. These credits can be carried forward onto some Master's programmes at the IOE (check individual programme requirements). Upon successful completion of 60 credits and the Professional Practice module, you will be awarded a PGCE in Mathematics.

School placements

Student Teachers undertake placements at two partnership schools. During each placement the development of their teaching practice is supported closely by a school-based mentor and other colleagues within the mathematics department. The school also provides a programme of Professional Studies which is co-ordinated by a senior teacher at the school. The Professional Practice module is assessed through observations of teaching and a portfolio of key assessments collated by the student teacher.

Funding your studies

For the academic year 2022/23, UK students on this PGCE may be eligible for a Department of Education teaching bursary of £24,000, subject to eligibility and previous qualifications. For information on rates and eligibility visit the Department for Education website. Students on this PGCE for the academic year 2022/23 may be eligible for a scholarship of £26,000. Scholarships are usually available to applicants with a 1st, 2:1, Master’s or PhD, though in exceptional circumstances they may be awarded to a graduate with a 2:2 and significant relevant experience.
