Max is a second year PhD researcher in Political theory at the UCL Department of Political Science.
Biography:
Max is a second year PhD researcher in Political Theory at UCL. They have a BA in Politics from Durham University and a MA in Legal and Political Theory from UCL. They spent four years working in the Cabinet Office where they worked on civil service reform, the ONS and PHSO sponsorship and the COP26 presidency.
PhD Title:
Democracy and the Civil Service: Justifying the Policy Function of Civil Servants in Modern Democracies (TBC).
Research Summary:
Max's research focusses on what functions civil servants perform in policy making in a democratic system. They will look at existing practices in the UK Civil Service and analytically examine the functions that a bureaucracy insulated from political contestation should perform. They will also examine how democratic contestation about the role of the civil service should influence its work. They are also in UK public policy and political theory more generally.
Teaching Summary:
Max is a PGTA for the first year undergraduate module 'Foundations of Political Thought' and the second year undergraduate module 'Authority, Democracy and Resistance'.
