Research summary

Research interests:

  • Novel techniques for engineering drug delivery systems (e.g inkjet and 3D printing)
  • Advanced characterisation of pharmaceuticals (e.g thermal analysis, spectroscopy and combined techniques)

  • Crystallisation in confinement

Recent projects

Inkjet Printing:

  • Developed a novel approach to crystallise and characterise merastable polymorphic forms using inkjet printing as part of the ongoing three-centre EPSRC's funded project "Computationally Designed Templates for Exquisite Control of Polymorphic Form"
  • Developed a successful approach to utilise thermal inkjet printing to prepare oral films for personalised dosing and crystal engineering of co-crystals during PhD study
Thermal Analysis of Pharmaceuticals
  • Involved in developing an in situ Differential Scanning Calorimetry-synchrotron X-ray diffraction (DSC-PXRD) at Diamond Light Source with researchers from UCL SOP on the Joint Engineering Environmental and Processing Beamline I12 (JEEP)
  • Worked on developing pharmaceutical applications of a prototype fast scan DSC (Project RHC) in collaboration with TA Instruments during MSc project entitled Characterisation of Pharmaceutical Polymorphs with Rapid-eating Differential Scanning Calorimetry

3D Printing for Pharmaceutical Applications

Dr. Asma Buanz is a Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Engineering at UCL School of Pharmacy, University College London. She obtained her BSc. (Pharm) in pharmaceutical sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benghazi, Libya. She studied for an MSc. degree in drug delivery at the School of Pharmacy, University of London and graduated with distinction and was awarded the AstraZeneca Prize (joint) for best academic performance of her class. She then undertook her PhD at UCL School of Pharmacy, University College London under the supervision of Professor Simon Gaisford. Dr. Buanz's past position was an Associate Researcher at the School which was funded by the EPSRC (EP/K03929/1) project 'Computationally designed templates for exquisite control of polymorphic form' (www.cposs.org.uk), which involves exploring the role of inkjet-printing in templating new pharmaceutically-related polymorphic forms.
